Complying with EPA Section 608

Refrigerant gases have been around for many years and almost every system leaks to one degree or another. These gases are basically condensed under pressure to obtain chilled air. In the 1970s, scientists discovered that certain refrigerants such as Freon and many others in the HCFC category could cause spontaneous, chemical reactions and destroy the delicate ozone layer protecting Earth’s atmosphere.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 requires anyone buying refrigerants or servicing refrigeration systems to keep detailed records of the disposition of the product. If you own or operate systems containing 50 pounds of refrigerant gas or more, existing and pending enhancements to refrigerant management regulations require system registration, accurate service record logs, refrigerant gas leak monitoring & detection, and regular refrigerant usage reporting. There repairs must be within 30 days of when the equipment leaks or can be waived if within 30 days of discovery, the owners develop a one-year retrofit or retirement plan.

Collecting, organizing, and reporting of refrigerant gas data is challenging, the complexity of system auditing is confusing, and it remains difficult to remain in compliance with regulations. Comfort Systems understands the ramifications of Section 608 and can take this worry off of your shoulders and place it in the hands of our experts, who have been safely and effectively handling refrigerant for many years.
